Fosroc wins Environment & Sustainability Award at Construct Day
Fosroc has been recognised with the Environment & Sustainability Award at this year’s Construct Day 2025, for its pivotal role in the A19 Tees Viaduct Substructure Refurbishment Scheme.
The project demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure repair, combining innovative materials, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable practices to extend the life of a key transport structure while minimising environmental impact.
Built in 1975, the A19 Tees Viaduct had suffered concrete deterioration typical of structures of its age. While earlier plans had proposed the demolition and replacement of the piers, the process posed significant health, safety, and logistical challenges, with potential disruption to the travelling public and local communities.
Working in partnership with Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL), AECOM, and National Highways, Fosroc UK helped deliver a sustainable alternative: an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system combined with Fosroc’s Renderoc dry spray repair materials. This innovative solution slowed deterioration and ensured the future longevity of the viaduct, providing an 80-year design life without the need for extensive demolition.
Fosroc played a central role throughout the project, providing technical guidance, regular site visits, and high-quality CarbonNeutral® certified materials. The team’s efforts resulted in:
- 98% reduction in CO₂ emissions for concrete elements
- 99% reduction in CO₂ emissions for steel
- 97% reduction in CO₂ emissions for timber
- 28.52 tonnes of CO₂ offset through the use of Fosroc products
Daren King, Northern Regional Director at CRL, praised Fosroc’s support:
"Environmental impact measurement tools such as the Carbon Calculator make the process much more efficient. Fosroc’s expertise and consistent high-quality products were instrumental in delivering a sustainable, long-lasting solution."
Beyond technical achievement, the project also demonstrated a commitment to social value. Fosroc volunteers collaborated with CRL at Nunthorpe Academy in Middlesbrough to deliver the Green Energy Challenge, inspiring the next generation on sustainable construction practices.
The A19 Tees Viaduct project has already received recognition, including The Bridges Ethos Award, with judges highlighting the project’s “collaborative working and community engagement.”
Through its innovative approach, Fosroc UK and its partners have not only preserved an important piece of infrastructure but have set a new benchmark for sustainable construction practices, demonstrating how collaboration, technology, and responsible material use can deliver long-term benefits for both the environment and the community.
