Construction of the state of the art Energy from Waste (EfW) facility.
THE PROJECT
Construction of the state of the art Energy from Waste (EfW) facility began in December 2011. Ardley EfW will process around 300,000 tonnes of non-hazardous, post-recycling and residual waste. The facility will take about 3 years to complete and commission, becoming fully operational in the second half of 2014. Given the type of construction, including a 12m basement built over an Artesian Well, the scheme offered a host of challenges including requirements for waterproofing, grouting, flooring and sealant work.
THE SOLUTION
Fosroc worked alongside Tata Projects to ensure specification for the scheme was robust and crucially buildable by the nominated contractor Clugston. The basement offered a challenge not only because of the extreme water pressure created by the Artesian Well but also because of the ammonium salts in the ground. Proofex Engage was selected for the task and provided a robust and chemically resistant barrier for the basement. Supercast SW20 was also used in the construction joints to reinforce the floor to wall joint. Conbextra GP and HF were specified and used for base plate grouting, the battery storage floor, which is exposed to a high level of possible chemical attack, was coated with Nitocote EN901 to protect against acid spillage, and the areas of concrete floor that will be heavily trafficked were finished with Nitoflor Hardtop.
THE BENEFIT
The contractor had a single source of supply and a full NMBS specification, as well as Fosroc’s very precise details to be used in conjunction with the architect’s drawings to ensure a watertight construction. A single source of supply also eased supply chain worries. Scheduling products ensured manufacture and on time delivery to meet programme expectations.
