Squiggly Bridge, UK
Fosroc used Nitodek FS to resurface the walkway of Glasgow's 'Squiggly Bridge' resulting in a safe, long-lasting and easy-care finish.
THE PROJECT
Glasgow’s Squiggly Bridge was originally opened in 2009 to link the districts of Anderston on the north bank to Tradeston and the neighbouring district of Kingston on the south bank. With the up-coming COP26 summit approaching, the walkway was refurbished in July 2021, including resurfacing, cleaning and partial painting. The existing coating was largely intact and still providing a waterproofing membrane, however an abrasion and slip-resistant solution was sought to enhance these characteristics and to lighten the previous dark-grey colouring. A fast-setting protective system was required to provide waterproofing as well as protection against carbonation/chloride ingress.
THE SOLUTION
Fosroc proposed Nitodek FS for the resurfacing, as it uses a technology which was compatible with the existing surface membrane. After extensive pull-off tests to check adhesion of both the old and new systems, works proceeded. Nitodek FS is a hybrid, fast curing, trafficable, waterproofing system combining MMA Technology with polyurethanes. It produces a slip resistant solution which is both hard wearing and flexible. A bespoke Nitodek FS - Flooring System - was selected meeting the specific project criteria.
THE BENEFITS
For the specialist contractor, the rapid curing polyurethane technology (at approximately 60 minutes per layer) offers easy application at low temperatures – even freezing weather. The work was completed within a shorter timescale, enabling reopening of the bridge to the public significantly earlier. Travel disruption and project costs were kept to a minimum.
The surface has outstanding impact resistance, resistance from de-icing salts and provides a seamless, safe finish. The anti-crack properties of the surface work to bridge gaps of up to 2mm, giving the Squiggly Bridge a long-lasting, easy care walkway for many years to come.
