THE PROJECT

South Quay Plaza is a new build residential skyscraper development in Canary Wharf, designed by Foster & Partners Architects, who are world renowned for landmark buildings. It comprises of 3 towers and retail space, and the car parks are located within the basement of the development along with the plant rooms/back of house and bicycle park. The carpark is spread over two floors with a curved ramp connecting the levels. As this was a high-spec residential development, application contractor Laing O’Rourke needed to source a high-performance flooring system for the car park finish.

THE SOLUTION

Fosroc recommended Nitodek UR300 for the carpark deck coating - a polyurethane-based waterproofing and crack bridging protection system for new and existing car park decks. It provides a protective, durable, elastic, impervious, skid resistant, attractive floor surface which is easy to clean and maintain. The system comprises of Fosroc Nitoprime UR (or Fosroc Nitoprime URFS), two high build coats of Fosroc Nitodek UR Membrane and Fosroc Nitodek UVR Topcoat and incorporates anti-skid quartz aggregate. The car park deck surrounded the lift cores, and in the centre of the car park was the bicycle park. The bicycle park was coated in Nitoflor FC150 which provides a hard wearing, easilycleaned, attractive floor coating. It is also used for industrial areas where highresistance to chemical attack and an abrasion resistant floorfinish is required.The plant rooms were coated in Nitocote EN901, an epoxy novolac coating designed to protect concrete and steel structures in aggressive chemical conditions.

THE BENEFITS

The high-quality solutions from Fosroc will provide reliable and long-lasting protection to the concrete surface, substantially reducing life-time maintenance costs for the client. The Nitodek UR system has excellent damage-resistant flexibility, whilst providing a hardwearing watertight finish. The system is anti-slip for safety and features multilayered crack-bridging technology. This makes it ideal not only for the main deck, but also for useon the internal ramp section in the car park as well, providing a seamless system between levels. The FC150 used in the bicycle parking area will continue to provide an easily cleaned and attractive floor coating. Lastly, the protective coating Nitocote EN901 will shield the plant room floors from any future chemical spills which may occur.
