Parteen Regulating Weir, Ireland
The weir required some routine maintenance and repairs to the main reinforced concrete structure whilst maintaining the efficient daily operation of the facility.
THE PROJECT
Parteen Regulating Weir controls the flow of water to Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Station and to the Old River Shannon. Built at the same time as the Hydro Electric Station, 1929, the weir has endured a constant flow of the river Shannon’s flooding waters and has regulated the necessary water requirements to the station. After this long period, the weir required some routine maintenance and repairs to the main reinforced concrete structure whilst maintaining the efficient daily operation of the facility.
THE SOLUTION
SCB Services, the appointed specialist repair contractor, carried out a wide range of repairs to the concrete structure utilising in most cases, a series of abseiling techniques in strict accordance with very stringent health and safety regulations. The defective areas of the existing substrate were removed using hydro demolition and the clean, exposed steel reinforcement was coated with Nitoprime Zincrich Plus. Smaller repair areas were primed with Renderoc Primer prior to application of Renderoc HB45 high performance, hand applied, fibre reinforced medium density concrete reinstatement mortar. Fosroc Renderoc LA a high performance free flowing low alkali micro concrete specifically developed for the repair of large areas of concrete where access is restricted was used for the reinstatement of the larger areas where the concrete had failed.
THE BENEFIT
Access, health and safety and time constraints were all significant factors on this complex project. The pre-bagged Fosroc repair solutions were well suited to these conditions as, not only are they are all quickly and easily mixed and applied, but also meet the BS EN 1504 requirements for Class 4 structural repair materials ensuring compatibility with the parent concrete and good durability. The consistency of the Fosroc bagged products also ensured a consistently excellent quality to all of the repairs that were carried out.
