THE PROJECT

The Karimenu Dam Water Supply Project is located in Kiambu County, Kenya. The project generates 70,000m3 of water per day, which benefits several water supply systems in the region.

Fosroc's products were approved for use in the construction of several parts of the structure, including the water supply tunnel (which measures approximately 408 meters in length), the water intake tower and trestle bridge (which stands at a height of 54 meters), the clay core rockfill dam, and the spillway. These products were approved after meeting the project's specifications.

THE SOLUTION

The Technical Team at Fosroc designed Sprayset HBP16 specifically to meet the project's requirement for an initial setting time of three minutes. Furthermore, other products provided for the project included Conbextra GP2, which is a cementitious grout that flows freely, has high precision, and is high in strength and non-shrinkable; Lokfix, a chemical anchor that is heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant, and strong; and Conplast SP431R, a super-plasticizing admixture that provides high performance for concrete. Additionally, Nitocote CM210, a cementitious waterproofing membrane, and Conplast WP 200, a concrete admixture with the ability to withstand both high positive and negative hydrostatic pressures, were also approved for use.

THE BENEFITS

Sprayed concrete with accelerated setting and reduced rebound was necessary for the construction of tunnels, which was effectively achieved with Sprayset HBP16. To improve the structural resistance, Conplast WP200 was utilized, while the Nitocote CM210 (WRAS portable water certified) waterproofing system provided the desired results for the project. The addition of Conplast SP431R admixture improved concrete workability, allowing for increased daily production and enabling the contractor to meet the client's timelines. Both Conbextra GP2 and Lokfix provided high strength and durability as anchoring solutions.
