Aston Villa Football Academy, UK
Aston Villa Football Club were granted planning approval from Birmingham City Council for phase one of the redevelopment and expansion of Villa Park to create a world class sports and entertainment venue and thriving community hub.
THE PROJECT
In December 2022, Aston Villa Football Club were granted planning approval from Birmingham City Council for phase one of the redevelopment and expansion of Villa Park to create a world class sports and entertainment venue and thriving community hub. As part of this, the new indoor pitch for the football academy required construction, including foundation waterproofing. The specialist contractor for this part of the project was Keating Projects Ltd, who engaged the Fosroc specification team due to their longstanding relationship working on various other waterproofing projects. The main contractor for the Inner City Aston Villa Football Academy project is the McGurk group working with HB Architects on the wider project, including construction of facility buildings. The key challenge was to provide a robust solution protecting against ground gas.
THE SOLUTION
Fosroc’s solvent-free Nitocote EP405 epoxy resin coating was specified alongside gas resistant waterproof membranes Proofex Total and 3000MR to provide full gas resistance and a waterproof lining to the base of the pitch. It was applied to areas unsuitable for membrane, such as joints. Proofex Total is a BBA-approved high performance, totally gas impervious reinforced membrane. It also acts like a conventional damp-proof ground membrane and features a polyester reinforcing grid for puncture resistance during application. Proofex 3000MR membrane combines toughness with flexibility for detailing around corners. All of the Fosroc products used are developed to maintain waterproofing and ground gas protection continuity as part of a solution that conforms to BS 6920 and BS8102:2022 standards.
THE BENEFITS
Both Proofex Total and Proofex 3000MR are self-adhesive allowing for quick and simple installation, with the 5-layer design of Proofex Total ensuring maximum gas protection that would last over the years. The solution from Fosroc using these products made it possible to safely omit details from the original design, simplifying the design to slimline the portfolio of products. With no venting systems, fans and pumps, the solution cut costs and reduced the time to project completion, leaving the client with a simple, effective and reliable construction.
