THE PROJECT

Adani Group is an $8.7 billion (2013), 10,000+ employee, diversified conglomerate with interests in ports, real estate, special economic zones, power generation, and oil and gas exploration and distribution. Adani Realty, the youngest arm of the Adani behemoth, developed about 50 million sq. ft. of real estate across India with an investment of about Rs. 3,500 crore. These projects would be completed over the next 5-7 years. The company is expanding its presence in the next 5 years and are already present in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Gurgaon and Kochi.

The Shantigram Project at Ahmedabad, cradled in the lap of greenery, flanked between Narmada Canal to the north and SG Highway to the south, developed by the Adani Group at Ahmedabad, is Gujarat’s largest integrated township spread over more than 600 acres, where state-of-the-art commercial complexes complement luxurious residences. Be it Water Lily, the beautiful lake view apartments, The Meadows, premium stadium-facing apartments, or The North Park, Shantigram’s exclusive golf villa community, Shantigram spoils you for choices.

Water Lily,a high-rise premium apartment complete with facilities such as a 1.7 km artificial  lake surrounded by high rise towers,is a natural fit for a walk after a meal. Water Lily provides a placid, serene home that is a great getaway from the hurried city life

THE SOLUTION

Waterproofing the artificial lake built in RCC around the towers was a challenge. The lake width varied from 40 to 60 mt, with a height of 4.5 mt and length about 1.7 km. Adjacent to the lake is the basement of the towers. Expansion joints at every 60 meter C/C were provided in the retaining wall to accommodate the thermal movements, as well as shrinkage strips at regular intervals to accommodate shrinkage cracks, and all the necessary precautions were taken while designing and executing the lake structure to accommodate the structural movement.

Challenges for waterproofing: The raft and retaining wall were independently casted to address movement at these joints and movement at the expansion joints. Continuous movement of water causes abrasion of the waterproof coating, and the waterproof coating is directly exposed to UV rays. Durability of the coating was one of the key requirements in order to minimize maintenance.

Waterproofing solution: Fosroc’s Polyurea WPE at 1.5 mm thick – Our spray-applied, 100% solids, flexible, two-component, rapid curing pure Polyurea system combines the advantages of seamless coating with very long life cycles and high durability. The top 0.5 meter height of the retaining wall above the free board was covered with two coats of UV-resistant PU top coat, Dekguard PU.

THE BENEFITS

Polyurea coating is a fully bonded, seamless coating with chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and high flexibility to accommodate the thermal movements and ensure a durable, watertight solution for the lake. Fosroc’s global expertise in execution of major polyurea works was an added advantage in delivering a unique waterproofing solution for the Adani Water Lily lake project.
