THE PROJECT

The £150 million Resorts World development is set to open in spring 2015 being the UK’s first integrated leisure and entertainment resort. Construction of the 538,000 sq. ft complex has begun and will feature amongst other things a 178 bedroom hotel, an 11 screen cinema, an outlet shopping centre and a casino. Situated adjacent to Birmingham International Airport and Rail Station, it will have seven above ground floors and two below, and is being built on an area of land next to a lake with active springs and a variable water table. It has been constructed using a Piled Foundation and Top Down construction technique. Detectable levels of ground gases have had to be dealt with as part of the water excluding waterproofing package.   

THE SOLUTION

An initial design consultation and competitor specification was overturned when Fosroc demonstrated the ability to supply a full range of integrated gas and waterproofing materials from one manufacturer. Coping with a complex design and construction technique, Proofex Engage, Proofex WG, Proofex Total, Proofex Hydromat and Proofex Cavity drain along with Nitocote EP403 and Supercast SW20 all linked together to fully tank the structure. In areas that proved to be inaccessible as the build progressed, Fosroc’s resin injection systems were utilized to keep the build programme on track. Over fifty bespoke details were produced on behalf of the architect

THE BENEFIT

The contractor had a single source of supply and a full NMBS specification, as well as Fosroc’s very precise details to be used in conjunction with the architect’s drawings to ensure a watertight construction.  A single source of supply also eased supply chain worries. Scheduling products ensured manufacture and on time delivery to meet programme expectations.
